Astrid Lindgren was born in 1907 and grew up in the south of Sweden. Her first book was published in 1944 followed a year later by Pippi Longstocking, who has become one of the most beloved children's characters in the world.
Pippi has distinctive red hair sticking out in two braids and shares a house with her monkey and horse but without adult supervision. She is also incredibly strong and very intelligent without having a formal education which combine to help her through the various adventures in which she takes part.
Pippi Longstocking has even been hailed as a feminist icon for her independent lifestyle but the most important thing about her is the amazing stories Astrid Lindgren spun for her which children still find fascinating to this day.
Some of Astrid Lindgren's other characters are Emil, Karlson and Lotta all of whom have their own mischievous sense of fun in their respective books. Her creations are not to be missed by children that love stories with a sense of humour a touch of naughtiness!
